Parents are an essential partner with schools and police in teaching kids how to avoid drugs and violence. There are many ways for parents be involved.

Tips For Parents

  1. Establish family rules that make it clear that drug use will not be tolerated.
  2. Educate yourself about drugs, so you can talk informatively with your children and answer their questions.
  3. Spend time with your children listening to their concerns and showing how much you love and care for them.
  4. Recognize that YOU are their most important role model.
  5. Because peer pressure is a major factor in teen drug use, know your children's friends.
  6. Talk with other parents. Try to establish uniform rules that make access to drugs harder, such as curfew and the amount of spending money they receive.
  7. If a problem exists, get help! Don't say "Not my child!"
  8. Teach them about the many positive alternatives to drug use.

Educate Yourself About Drugs

Parents can receive a free book about drugs and violence called "Confusions" by contacting us or visiting Columbus Police Department.  The 50-page color book describes various drugs and their effects, along with photos of each.  Confusions also addresses violence issues, such as date violence, family violence, and bullying.  Call 376-2631 or e-mail info@bcdare.com

Also, check out the resources on the 'links' page of this web site to learn more about specific drugs like marijuana, methamphetamine, and inhalants.

Promote Healthy Activities

D.A.R.E. encourages kids to get involved with healthy activities. Studies show that kids involved in sports and other healthy activities are less likely to get involved with delinquent activities.
